You can have a maximum of 30 frigates in your fleet. To cover all possible mission types, you will want at least 4-5 of each specialty ship type (perhaps as many as 7 eventually) and 5-7 good support ships. Every 24 hours, 5 new missions will spawn, each of which you can assign up to five of your Frigates to attempt.
Sadly, combat in No man's sky are really barren (borderline placeholders) the turrets on your freighter will never attack, even if you are been assaulted near the freighter. The only way to have those turrets to do something is if an enemy craft shoot the freighter by accident, then the turrets will react and attack.

Also should only need to tap E to land, no need to hold it but I shouldn't think holding it would affect anything, seems like a strange bug to me! Edit: There isn't another ship on the landing pad

So here are the steps: Find a portal. Enter the destination code and travel to the selected planet. (Your ship stays at the portal) Place a Signal Booster and find a Base you can claim. No one can teleport into the freighter, but your friend can use the teleporter on your freighter base to teleport out. They can use any refiners and harvest plants that you are growing in the freighter. Never messed with it, but my understanding is if they harvest plants it will not effect your harvest.

Go to a trade outpost, you can summon more than one of your ships and land them in the landing pads. With your visor you can know the class of the ship and the price, you don't need to talk with the NPC. When you see a good deal hop in the ship you want to trade, so is active, and talk with the NPC.
You defeat them and answer the call. You can then land on that freighter, go to the bridge and speak with the captain. He will give you the command of that freighter for free. Some people recommend save scamming in order to get the S class but I wouldn’t bother at this point. You can use this freighter as your mobile base and store up to 6 ship.
